In 2017, Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer recorded a 7% decline in the production volume of business jets due to a continuing trend of weakening in the industry; however, the company stated that deliveries were "within the range of annual forecasts."
Embraer delivered 109 aircraft in the 12 months ending December 31, including 72 light and 37 large jets, compared to a total of 117 last year, which included 73 light and 44 large aircraft.
Deliveries led to an increase in sales in the fourth quarter, with Embraer handing over more than 50 business jets from October to December—more than double the number in each of the previous quarters and 7 units more than in the last three months of 2016.
Analysis of the manufacturer's delivery data shows that the most popular model was the light business jet Phenom 100, with a total of 18 deliveries. The entry into service of the updated EV version in April, featuring a Garmin G3000 touchscreen and a more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F1-E turbofan, helped enhance the appeal of this entry-level aircraft in a highly competitive market that represents a significant portion of its customer base.
Embraer hopes that a wave of upgrades designed for all models will help boost sales. The first E-model variant of the Phenom 300 business jet will be introduced with its unnamed South African customer in February. It features a redesigned cabin, a facelift, improved seating, and a high-quality entertainment system developed in collaboration with Lufthansa Technik. Embraer states that the initial aircraft, serial number 448, is now being painted at its facility in Melbourne, Florida, and will then return to the production line for interior completion and flight preparation.
In March, Embraer will begin delivering the first updated Legacy 450 and 500 models.
