What are Empty Legs?
Empty Legs (also called repositioning, ferry, or non-revenue flights) are private jet sectors flown without passengers — typically after a charter or to reposition the aircraft to its next mission.
For example:
An aircraft completes a charter from Moscow to Istanbul, then must return to its base in Moscow. The return leg Istanbul → Moscow is flown empty (no passengers) and is already covered by the first client’s trip.
Instead of flying the jet back empty, the operator may offer seats on that leg at a large discount — often 50–75% lower than a regular private charter.
For travelers, it’s a chance to fly private at a price closer to premium economy or business class on a scheduled airline.
Why are Empty Legs

The main reason is reducing downtime and repositioning costs: it’s often better for an operator to sell seats at a reduced rate than to fly empty.
Factors that affect Empty Leg pricing
- Short booking window. The closer to departure, the better the price — many offers appear 1–3 days before takeoff.
- Fixed route and schedule. Departure date and routing are usually predefined.
What is included in
an Empty Leg flight?
- Aircraft charter. You charter the entire aircraft — pricing typically includes up to 4 passengers. If you’re sharing a ferry flight, tell us the passenger count and we’ll calculate the fare (each extra passenger may incur an additional fee).
- Crew. Crew compensation and per diems are included. On board: professional pilots and, on mid/large jets, cabin crew.
- Fuel for the route. Fuel for the entire mission is included, including any required fuel stops.
- Airport fees. Mandatory departure/arrival charges are included (e.g., landing, parking for a short time).
Ground handling: standard handling is included (towing, stairs, assistance with pre-flight procedures).
What is not included in an Empty Leg:
- Route or date changes. Empty Legs are tied to a fixed schedule and routing. Any changes are discussed separately and may incur extra cost.
- Ground transfers. Airport transfers are not included by default. JETVIP can arrange transfers on request.
