What is Empty Legs?
Empty Legs (also “empty flights”, “positioning legs”, or “repositioning flights”) are a segment of business aviation related to ferry flights of private jets without passengers.
For example:
A jet performs a charter flight from Moscow to Istanbul. After that, it must return to its base in Moscow. This return flight from Istanbul to Moscow is empty (without passengers) and already paid for by the first client.
Instead of flying empty, the operator offers seats on this flight at a significant discount — often 50–75% cheaper than a regular charter.
For clients, it’s a chance to fly a private jet at a price close to a first-class commercial airline ticket.
Why are Empty Legs cheaper?
The main reason for the low cost is saving on aircraft downtime and repositioning flight expenses. For jet owners or operators, it's more profitable to sell seats even at cost than fly empty.
Factors influencing Empty Leg pricing
- Short booking window. The closer to departure, the better the price. These flights are usually available 1–3 days before departure.
- Fixed route. Most often, the date and route are fixed.
What is included in the Empty Legs price?
Included in the price:
- Jet rental. You rent the entire aircraft — the price includes costs for 4 passengers. For shared flights, specify the number of passengers, and we will calculate the cost (extra passenger — up to 100,000 RUB).
- Crew services. Crew salary and per diems are included. On board — professional pilots and a flight attendant (for medium and large business jets).
- Fuel for the route. The price includes fuel for the full route, including refueling if necessary.
- Airport fees. Mandatory departure and arrival airport fees are included — for example, takeoff, landing, and short-term aircraft parking.
Ground handling includes standard airport services (handling): towing, stair truck, assistance with preflight procedures.
What is not included in the Empty Legs price:
- Route or departure date changes. Empty Legs are tied to a specific date and route. Any changes to the schedule or deviations from the route are discussed and, if needed, paid for separately.
- Ground transportation. By default, transfers to/from the airport are not included in the price. JETVIP can organize transfers on request.
